Mircea Corcodel is one of our fantastic artists. His artworks are well known and he has participated in numerous exhibitions. He works in private collections in: U.S.A, Germany, Israel, Maroc, Greece, Italy, Spain. Also, he is a founding member of Architects Order of Romania, member of the Romanian Architect Union, vice president of Watercolour Painters Asociation, president of 3A- Aquarellist Architects Asociation.
My profession is that of an architect. But the passion for drawing was generally cultivated by my mother who encouraged me to develop my skills in drawing and observing the color. I attended a school of plastic arts in the general school classes that helped me to build a foundation in this field. Next, I went to the University of Architecture in Bucharest and I continued to develop my visual and design skills. A highlight from my academic years would be the studies carried out with the Form Study Department. Here I managed to rediscover other abilities – on the modeling and sculpting side.
Being a student in the architecture faculty, I did, besides major projects, numerous exhibitions or arrangements for different events that required a graphic involvement. Then, as an architect, I was co-opted in organizing painting exhibitions in multiple cities in Romania.
What concerns me, in particular, is what is most important and characteristic in the watercolor. I mean: light, contrasts, chromatic balance, transition, transparency and final clues. My new job is now painting in watercolor that I have practiced all the time, because besides the fact that I have the opportunity to learn others from my experience, I can exhibit my works at various exhibitions in the country and abroad.
Who are your biggest influences? What or who inspires in your career?
Some mentors I am following are Eduard Seago, Eduard Wesson from the UK, Alvaro Castagnet, Joseph Zbukvic, Chien Chung Wei and Ilya Ibraev.
Passion… I could say it is the first momentum for creation. Without passion and love for what I do, I cannot do anything. For drawing, color that can be shredded on paper or canvas and create shapes and colors. Everything that surrounds me inspires me, because according to the moment of the day you perceive and feel otherwise. As a photographer, when I have the opportunity, I search for subjects, take photos, look for interesting angles, but also a light that puts the subject to good use. You can do the same thing several times, and you will never go out the same way.
Which current art world trends are you following?
Impressionist, because it suits me best and I have a greater freedom of creation.
What role does the artist have in society?
Besides the basic role of creating and recreating what he sees and feels, the plastic artist also has to provide a visual education for those interested – children or adults. I think it is very important to educate children especially because it is a necessary and useful component for life, in general. Just as good music or architecture can generate positive influences in a man’s evolution.
What’s your favorite technique?
Watercolour, acrylic, graphics, mixed technique.
How would you describe your practice?
Usually, I choose topics from nature because I enjoy working outdoors.
I have sketchbooks, I am always studying at my workplace, and whenever I find something interesting, I start sketching. I love the variation, so I’m not only happy with the classic formulas but also with the mixed techniques I make on different materials and in various combinations.
What themes do you pursue?
The themes I choose are diverse, starting with landscapes in all seasons, static nature, portraits, cities and abstract themes, inspired by the environment as well.
What is your dream project?
I would like to have the opportunity to educate children in the sense of visual education by creating and developing an artistic school.
